Economic solvency (permanent)

During 2026, Migraciones updated solvency accreditation aspects for certain permanent residencies. Documentation may depend on the applicant’s situation. Paraguay OS checks current official sources — without a single generic answer.

Official information

Según DNM (Ley N.º 6984/2022), la residencia temporal autoriza permanecer hasta 2 años, prorrogable por igual período. Generalmente es vía previa a la permanente. Durante el procesamiento del expediente el extranjero queda en situación precaria; una vez aprobada, obtiene carnet de residencia y cédula de identidad extranjera vinculada a la vigencia del carnet.

Residency options

These are relevant public paths. The exact regime is confirmed by nationality and case — there is no single procedure for everyone.

  • Temporary Residency — Law 6984

    Allows foreigners to reside temporarily in Paraguay under Migration Law No. 6984/2022.

    • Requires document analysis for each case.
    • May allow access to a Paraguayan ID card under current conditions.
    • Later extension or category change may be possible, depending on regime and situation.

    It is a general-regime path — not necessarily applicable to every nationality.

  • MERCOSUR Temporary Residency

    Specific regime under the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement. Own requirements — do not confuse with general Temporary Residency under Law 6984.

    • Nationalities currently enabled (Migraciones): Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador.
    • Duration published by Migraciones: 2 years, non-extendable.

  • Permanent Residency

    Paraguay provides different permanent residency paths. The applicable path depends on the applicant’s migration and personal situation.

    • There is no single universal route for every case.
    • Prior temporary residency, family ties, investment or other specific regimes may apply — depending on the case and current rules.

    Per-path requirement detail is published only when validated in knowledge.

  • MERCOSUR Permanent Residency

    Intended for citizens covered by the MERCOSUR Agreement who meet requirements and hold prior MERCOSUR temporary residency.

    • For MERCOSUR Permanent Residency, Migraciones currently indicates the applicant must hold a MERCOSUR Temporary Residence Card nearing expiry. The application must be filed within the corresponding official period before expiry.
    • Always check the current Migraciones publication for the exact window.

    This rule is not universalized to other permanent residencies.
